Hands of Empathy: Jefferson’s Impact in the World of Sign Language Interpretation

At GLOBO, we celebrate the diverse paths and contributions of our team members. Jefferson Schmidt, GLOBO's Manager of Scheduled Interpreting Services, whose unexpected journey from a business major to an ASL interpreter highlights the profound impact of effective communication. Schmidt's story not only showcases his personal growth but also sheds light on the crucial role of interpretation in education and the challenges and rewards of ASL interpreting.

Schmidt originally attended school for business, but an opportunity to join a workshop revealed his potential in ASL interpretation. Encouraged by the feedback that he had the skills and "chops" for interpreting, Schmidt made a pivotal decision for his future career path. Although interpreting wasn't his initial goal, he soon discovered a passion for the field.

ASL interpretation is far more than translating words; it involves conveying emotions and cultural contexts. Schmidt has tackled several misconceptions about ASL interpreting, emphasizing it's not merely about "translating" but about understanding and communicating complex emotional and cultural nuances.

If you're not conveying the passion — or dispassion — behind the speech, you're not interpreting what they're saying,"

- Jefferson Schmidt, Manager of Scheduled Interpreting Services

Schmidt notes, explaining the importance of emotional accuracy in interpretation.

As Schmidt reflected on his own experiences, he emphasized the vital role interpretation plays in these environments. "You've got to like the environment. You have to like kids. You have to support kids. You have to support the teachers."

In his current role at GLOBO as Manager of Scheduled Interpreting Services, Jefferson supports ASL staff interpreters across Texas. "My job is to support our staff interpreters in Houston, San Antonio, and Austin. We have a team in Houston dedicated to educational interpreting, so they're in schools every day," Schmidt explains. His work ensures that Deaf and hard of hearing students receive equitable educational opportunities, helping them academically and socially succeed.

The field of ASL interpretation demands both physical and emotional resilience. Schmidt acknowledges the importance of managing these demands through protective factors. ASL interpreters must be not only proficient in sign language but also in sensitive cultural contexts, handling the emotional weight of interpreting in sensitive situations with care.

Schmidt's journey reflects his dedication to his craft and his commitment to bridging communication gaps. His work in education, efforts to dispel misconceptions about ASL interpretation, and his commitment to empathetic and accurate communications showcase his integral role at GLOBO. We are proud to have Jefferson Schmidt as a part of our team!
