From Crunching Numbers to Advocacy: Get to Know Betsy Payne

Written by GLOBO | Sep 24, 2024 1:20:09 PM

Meet Betsy Payne! This is one of many employee features that highlight outstanding people and their work at GLOBO. As a staff accountant, Betsy’s attention to detail and passion for her work have made her an integral part of GLOBO.

Betsy Payne, who is Deaf, communicates using American Sign Language (ASL)  and often works with interpreters, particularly in professional settings. From a young age, she valued independence and discovered a natural affinity for working with numbers — a field where her sharp attention to detail and focus have helped her excel.

"I'm more focused on details. I'm very good at picking up on those errors... I don't miss a lot that people who aren't more visually attuned might miss," said Payne.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Payne is passionate about encouraging other Deaf and hard of hearing individuals to pursue their careers. She emphasizes the importance of self-advocacy and the need to ensure that everyone, regardless of hearing ability, has access to communication resources such as language access.

"Don't be afraid. Do it. Work for it. You will always be able to have access to communication... Advocate for yourself. I encourage people to do that and advocate for their right to communication access," said Payne.

Payne also believes that companies need to develop strategies for improving accessibility — not just for Deaf and hard of hearing individuals, but for anyone who may face language barriers.

They need to develop a strategy on how to improve communication access. It's not just for Deaf and hard of hearing but for anybody for whom English is not their first language. There has to be a plan if you want to have a diverse company; you have to be willing to learn to interact with other people."

Payne takes pride in proving that living an independent and successful life is not only possible for Deaf and hard of hearing individuals but can also be far more accessible than you might think.

"If you look at the broad industry, the representation is very small...I'm really hoping that my experience here [at GLOBO] will help the Deaf community realize they can. They can leave and have professional lives with access to technology and all the things that provide communication," said Payne.

Payne strives to become a manager of her team one day. She expressed excitement about the challenge of managing a hearing team for a hard of hearing person. She exemplifies resilience and excellence as a staff accountant at GLOBO, and her passion for advocating for inclusivity and language access perfectly aligns with our mission.
